We’re thrilled to introduce Dr. Patrick Flynn, DACVS-SA, who will be joining our team in June 11, 2025. With his arrival, our surgical service will be available six days a week, giving patients and referring DVMs greater access to advanced care.

Dr. Flynn brings a decade worth of orthopedic and soft tissue surgery experience to Broward county. He will have a strong focus on increasing access to arthroscopic and fluoroscopic procedures, complex fracture repair, oncologic surgery, and soft tissue reconstruction surgery following trauma or tumor removal.

We’re very excited to have his expertise and passion join our specialty team.

Coming Soon: Dr. Jaymie Zweig

We’re also excited to share that Jaymie Zweig, DVM will be joining our surgical service this September, following the completion of her residency at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. We look forward to welcoming her and sharing more about her background soon!

Heard the Buzz About Hi Flo O₂?

You may have heard the term high-flow oxygen therapy floating around lately—pun intended. This advanced respiratory support system allows us to deliver warm, humidified oxygen at higher flow rates, making it easier for patients in respiratory distress to breathe without the stress of more invasive methods. It is especially beneficial for conditions like pneumonia, pulmonary contusions, or upper airway obstruction—and it’s available right here at VCA Hollywood. Think of it as an oxygen upgrade, giving our critical patients more comfort and more support, faster.

Meet Dr. Adrienne Newball Diez
Staff Veterinarian DVM

Member of Broward County Veterinary Medical Association

Adrienne Newball Diez, a Puerto Rican native, knew at a very young age that her love and respect for animals would lead her to become "an animal doctor". Her passion for veterinary medicine solidified during a hands on experience with farm animals while earning her bachelor's degree in biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts and finalized her goal with a clinical year at Oklahoma State University.

With a strong interest in ophthalmology, dermatology and oncology, her long-term hope is to further her training through the pursuit of a residency. While at VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital Dr. Diez remains focused on building connections with our pet community and providing exceptional care to her patients.

When not in her white coat, Dr. Diez enjoys traveling, reading sci-fi fantasy novels and spending time with her family and three spoiled fur siblings.

Making Specialty Pet Care Accessible.

Our specialists are making even more time available to care for pets.

The veterinary industry has seen its share of strained this year as general practitioners and emergency care facilities see a high volumes of urgent care cases on top of their typical case loads.

Specialty medicine has seen this same influx as well which is why our innovative team at VCA Hollywood created a wait-list tool to ensure our specialty patients recieved access to available appointment as soon as possible. Now, our oncology service has added more consultation times to make oncology care even more accessible to pets in need.

The goal of our Pet Cancer Care team is to ensure pets enjoy the very best quality of life. With the support and collaboration of the entire VCA Hollywood doctors and staff, they also have the best team possible to care for pet.

What is involved in a Canine Annual Wellness Visit?

What is involved in a Canine Annual Wellness Visit?

VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital selects vaccine protocol (frequency) based on breed, age, and lifestyle.

How Vaccinations Work: When administered, they stimulate your dog's immune system to produce disease-fighting calls and proteins-or antibodies-to protect against disease.

Vaccine Information:

DA2P-Pv Vaccine

  • Canine Distemper- Vaccination against this often fatal, hard-to-treat disease is essential
  • Canine Parvovirus- This illness is very contagious, debilitating, and widespread—the disease caused by infected feces.
  • Canine Adenovirus, Type 2-Canine Adenovirus is a relative of the hepatitis virus and is one of the causes of canine kennel cough.
(DA2PP Vaccine 1 or 3-year inoculation)

Bordetella (Canine Cough) Vaccine - This respiratory-tract infection, similar to the common human cold, is easily transmitted from one dog to another. (Canine Tracheobronchitis Vaccine 1-year inoculation)

Rabies Vaccine- This incurable viral disease affects the central nervous system of almost all mammals, including humans. It is spread by contact with the saliva of infected animals through bites or skin breaks. Vaccination will provide your pet with excellent resistance to Rabies if they become exposed. For this reason, Florida municipalities require that all dogs receive Rabies Vaccinations regularly. (Rabies Vaccine 1 or 3-year inoculation)

Local municipalities mandate the purchase of an annual license tag on the anniversary of the Rabies vaccine. Broward County tags are available for purchase for county residents.

Canine Influenza (H3N8/H3N2) Vaccine - This flu is highly contagious and easily transmitted via contact, cough, sneeze, and contaminated surfaces. Usually mild in 80% of the cases, some dogs exhibit more severe symptoms, and a small number of dogs have died from complications associated with this disease. *A booster vaccination three weeks following the initial vaccination is necessary. (Canine Influenza Vaccine 1-year inoculation)

Leptospirosis Vaccine - A bacterial disease that attacks the kidneys and liver. This disease is zoonotic, which means it could transmit to humans.*A booster vaccination three weeks following the initial vaccination is necessary. (Leptospirosis Vaccine 1-year inoculation)

Lyme Disease- Ticks transmit the disease to dogs, other animals, and humans. Lyme disease, if left untreated, could have severe consequences on a dog's health. This disease is most common in the northern parts of the United States. *A booster vaccination three weeks following the initial vaccination is necessary.

Annual Physical Examination- The annual exam is more than just a cursory check-up. Most often, during these veterinary exams, a veterinarian can pick up the early warning signs of a severe problem that will affect your pet in the future. Your veterinarian has special training and experience in detecting subtle illnesses in pets.  (Comprehensive Wellness Examination 6 to 12-months)

Intestinal Parasite (Fecal) Examination - A fecal examination is the microscopic evaluation of feces performed annually to detect tiny gastrointestinal parasites that can cause your pet to become ill. Some parasites can transmit to people. (Fecal Examination Annual Test)

Heartworm Antigen Test- Dogs get Heartworm Disease from mosquitos. This test is a simple screening test to check if your pet has been exposed to Heartworm Disease. (Heartworm Antigen Test to Antech Annual)

Wellness & Prevention Profile Testing-
Dogs are very good at masking illness, and disease may be present even in pets that appear healthy. Wellness testing is a simple and effective way of monitoring your dog's health. If a concern is found, steps can often be taken to manage the problem. For more information on wellness testing, speak with your veterinarian.(Wellness Profile Blood Test to Antech Recommended Annually Varies By Profile)

Learn more about Meals on Wheel of So. Florida's Companion Pet Program.

Meals for Companion Pets Founded in 1999, the Meals for Companion Pets Program is a volunteer-driven effort providing pet food to homebound and disabled seniors in Broward County. Research shows that seniors with pets are less likely to exhibit depression, report feelings of loneliness and experience illness. But taking care of a pet – feeding, grooming and veterinary care – can be financially and physically burdensome to seniors. More often than not, a devoted animal lover with limited access to food will feed their hungry pet before they feed themselves. Pet food is provided through the generosity of local donors and grants and is delivered on the third Saturday of each month. Volunteers are always needed on the third Saturday of the month to pack & deliver food.

Canine Influenza Virus Outbreak in Palm Beach County

50-60 dogs positive for canine influenza at Big Dog Ranch

Multiple dogs at Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Loxahatchee Grove have tested positive for canine influenza, a highly contagious respiratory disease.

The details were confirmed Wednesday by founder Laurie Simmons and the shelter's spokesman Chase Scott.

Scott said Big Dog Ranch Rescue took in a dog after it was surrendered by a Palm Beach County owner.

That dog later tested positive for canine influenza three days later, which Simmons said then spread to 50 to 60 dogs that are currently sick.

"(The surrendered dog) appeared to be healthy, was updated on vaccines, already spayed. So instead of putting it in quarantine, where we normally put all our shelter dogs coming in, we put it directly into our adoption buildings," Simmons said.

She said four adoption buildings at the facility have been on lockdown since June 8.

"It's like way bigger than anything we have ever seen," Simmons said.

She doesn't believe that any dogs adopted before June 8 were affected by the virus.

Currently, puppy cabins, which are separate and isolated from the affected areas, are the only areas where dog adoptions are being allowed.

Simmons said they will administer canine influenza vaccines to dogs that have not been affected by the disease starting Thursday.
"This is a highly infectious virus. If you are in contact, and the dog coughed on you, saliva on you, it can be carried on your clothes, your skin, your shoes and lives on surfaces for up to 48 hours," Simmons said. "If you are walking your dog, another dog coughs on the grass, your dog sniffs that spot, it can get the virus that way also."

_________________________________________________________________________________

"We have multiple confirmed cases not only in the dogs at the Big Dog Ranch shelter, but also in pet dogs out in the community, so it is good evidence the virus is here in Palm Beach County," Crawford said.

Dr. Cynda Crawford explains that canine influenza can spread very easily among dogs.

She said this marks the first return of the canine influenza virus in Florida since a big statewide outbreak in the summer of 2017.

Health experts say there is no evidence of the spread of canine influenza from dogs to people, and there have not been any cases of human infection with the canine influenza virus in the U.S. or world.
_________________________________________________________________________________

The signs of this illness in dogs are the following:
Cough
Runny nose
Fever
Lethargy
Eye discharge
Reduced appetite

The CDC says most dogs affected by canine influenza recover within two to three weeks and only a small percentage die from the disease.

CT include:
* Pre-Surgery Examination-Each pet is given a thorough examination before surgery allowing us to determine anesthesia risk before surgery.
* Intravenous Catheter-The catheter gives access to a vein so that the doctor is able to administer drugs and fluids.
